In this article, you will be able to know what is UTM tracking and its purpose.

UTM tracking is a well-known way that enables Google Analytics to tell you where your visitors came from. Using UpViral, you can automatically include those UTM variables every time a visitor is referred by someone's invite link, allowing you to see the full impact of your UpViral campaign from inside Google Analytics.

The UTM code itself has two components:

  • UTM Parameter - that starts with utm_. There are 5 separate parameters you can track: utm_source, utm_campaign, utm_content, utm_term (more on these below).

  • Tracking variable – a unique variable to identify the dimension being tracked (such as the name of the traffic source). This variable is preceded by the "=" sign. You can have only numbers, letters, hyphens, '+' signs, and periods in the variable. This code tracks multiple variables, such as traffic source, traffic campaign, etc.

Adding the UTM code doesn't impact the actual page. You can very well delete the UTM code from the URL and the page would continue to load normally. The code only serves one purpose: to help your google analytics tool track the source of your visitor.

On your Upviral campaign, you can enable this inside your campaign: Advanced > UTM-tracking:

You can make changes to the Medium and Source according to your needs or you can keep it as it is.

And once this is enabled, every time someone clicks or visits one of the invite links we automatically include the tracks to the end of the URL invite link so that from that point you can see inside your google analytics how much traffic you got for that particular campaign.

NOTE:  UTM results will not be tracked by Upviral and no UTM data will be shown on the campaign's Reports page.
